Small plane crashes into house in New York  1 Month ago

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – At least two people were killed and another was unaccounted for Saturday after a plane crashed into a house in New York, authorities say.

According to state police, the plane carrying three people crashed into a home on South Smith Street in Union Vale, near Poughkeepsie, just after 4 p.m. One person on board died and two were injured.

Three people were inside the home. One died, another was seriously hurt and the third is unaccounted for. The names of the victims were not immediately released.

The home was fully engulfed in flames after the crash, police said. Smoke was visible coming from the area of the residence, though the home was not visible from beyond the perimeter established by law enforcement and fire officials.

The house is located in a rural residential area.

The plane was a twin-engine Cessna 303 model, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Cessna left Sky Acres Airport in LaGrangeville, a mile from the crash, and was headed to Republic Airport on East Farmingdale, Long Island.

State police Capt. Paul DeQuarto said at a news conference that the plane first took off from the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, New York, then stopped to refuel 40 miles away at the Sky Acres Airport before continuing toward Long Island.

DeQuarto said the Cessna had some kind of engine trouble before it struck the side of the two-story house, but he had no other details.

Sky Acres Airport is a privately-owned, public access airport.

The airport's website lists it as "an ideal landing site and stopover for travelers visiting the Hudson Valley and New England areas.”

Republic Airport, located in East Farmingdale on Long Island, is a general aviation airport “that supports recreation and business flying, but not commercial,” according to its website.
